Please support House Bill 1146

Although almost all voters are eligible to vote from jail, they lack the same access to the internet, ballot return services, and election information that other citizens enjoy. By requiring jails to allow people the basic access to their voting freedoms, we can ensure that people awaiting trial or serving short sentences can make their voices heard.

Dear members of the House Appropriations committee,

I am writing to ask you to support House Bill 1146, which would ensure citizens in our county jails can exercise their freedom to vote.

Although almost all are eligible to vote from jail, people lack the equal access to the internet, ballot return services, and election information that other citizens enjoy.

Many people in jail are pre-trial and will never be convicted of anything at all. People end up serving short sentences for traffic violations, or simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. And we know that race and money are a huge factor in who ends up behind bars - Black and brown people are more likely to live in highly-policed neighborhoods, and lower-income working families can’t afford bail or expensive lawyers.

We have an opportunity to get people engaged positively in their communities, keep elected officials accountable to their most directly-impacted constituents, and continue the work of the civil rights movement to give every citizen an equal opportunity to vote, no matter our race, income, or circumstances.

Please require our jails to give citizens basic information about their rights, and the means to exercise them. Will you vote to move HB 1146 forward before February 28?
