I am a resident of your district writing to ask you to support Senate Bill 5077, which would expand automatic voter registration to people becoming citizens, applying for healthcare, or returning home from prison.

Voter registration - and problems with registration - can be one of the highest barriers to voting, but automatic voter registration at the DMV is lowering those barriers for many Washingtonians.

However, new Americans, low-income people, and people with past convictions are less likely to get an expensive enhanced license at the DMV.

By automatically registering people to vote when they become citizens, apply for healthcare, or return home from prison, we take the burden of registration off of potential voters.

This takes out the guesswork for immigrants and formerly-incarcerated citizens about their eligibility, and reduces errors in registration. The state would save time and money, keep our voter rolls accurate, and diminish the disparities in voter registration by race, income, and conviction history.

I am proud that our state continues to make voting simpler in a time where other states are restricting citizens’ freedom to vote.

Please vote for SB 5077 when it is brought to the Senate floor.
