Support SB 5082 to eliminate “advisory votes”

Voting should be a simple, accessible way for all of us to make a real difference in our communities. However, the “advisory votes” that clutter up our ballots every year have no power to change our laws, and they continue to create confusion and apathy amongst new voters.

The same people that put these misleading and wasteful votes on our ballot are fighting to keep them there. Will you make sure our representatives hear from all of us who support passing SB 5082 to clean up our ballots?

I am writing to you in support of Senate Bill 5082, which would remove the misleading and wasteful “advisory votes” that clutter up my ballot every year.

Washington has done a lot of good work to make sure that every citizen can easily make our voice heard and create real change in our communities.

However, “advisory votes” work against these goals. They are confusing and time-consuming for all of us, especially immigrant voters, new voters, and others who already face many barriers to making their voices heard.

These votes are also non-binding, meaning they create no real change in our communities. They waste our time and the resources that our state could use to improve voting access and education.

They are also filled with biased and misleading language that was designed to make voters feel more cynical about the legislature’s work. We believe that the ballot is sacred, and not a place for surveys that attempt to influence public opinion rather than measure it.

Senate Bill 5082 would replace “advisory votes” with something actually useful - information for voters about budgeting work in the legislature that would give us context about the work we do together.

I’m proud to be from a state that has done great work for voters in the past, and I urge you to continue that legacy by supporting Senate Bill 5082.
